The crypto market continued moving closer to the mainstream this week, with developments highlighting the growing role of digital assets across money, investment, financial infrastructure, and economic policy. Research suggesting that stablecoins could become part of the U.S. money supply underscored their expanding role in the monetary system, while El Salvador’s Bitcoin reserve offered another example of BTC being incorporated into a national financial strategy. At the international level, the G20 recognised digital assets as a potential driver of economic growth and financial innovation, while the SEC proposed updating transfer-agent rules to account for blockchain-based infrastructure. Together, the developments show an industry increasingly moving beyond speculation and into the wider financial system.
Dollar stablecoins create pressure on local currencies

New research from the Bank of Korea shows that growing demand for dollar stablecoins can create additional pressure on national currencies. When investors use local money to acquire dollar-linked digital assets, demand effectively shifts part of their exposure away from domestic currencies and towards the U.S. dollar.
Rather than remaining confined to crypto exchanges, stablecoin activity can now reach the foreign exchange market and influence currency prices. The development demonstrates how digital assets are creating new channels for moving and managing capital, connecting the crypto economy with financial markets that have traditionally operated separately.
Stablecoins were created to combine the stability and accessibility of fiat currencies with the flexibility of blockchain technology. Their growing presence in currency markets shows that use cases are expanding beyond crypto trading. Investors can use dollar-backed tokens to transfer value, access dollar exposure, and move funds across digital markets, while liquidity providers increasingly connect those transactions with conventional financial infrastructure.
The Bank of Korea’s findings therefore offer another indication of crypto’s expanding role in the global financial system. In markets where local currencies face inflation, depreciation or limited access to foreign currencies, dollar stablecoins can provide an alternative digital route to dollar-denominated value. As adoption continues to grow, the impact of stablecoins on exchange rates and capital flows is likely to become an increasingly important part of the broader evolution of finance.
U.S. crypto regulation faces its own pressure test

The U.S. crypto market is heading into one of its most important regulatory weeks of the year. After months of negotiations and delays, the Clarity Act is approaching a key Senate vote on Sept. 15, putting the future of comprehensive crypto market-structure legislation back in focus.
The legislation would establish clearer rules for the digital-asset industry and define the respective roles of the Securities and Exchange Commission and Commodity Futures Trading Commission. Its progress has been slowed by disagreements over issues including stablecoin rewards and ethics provisions, leaving lawmakers with a narrow window to reach a deal.
The outcome could have lasting consequences for the U.S. crypto market. Passage would give companies and investors a clearer legislative framework for operating in the sector, while another failure would prolong uncertainty around market structure. Senator Cynthia Lummis has warned that if Congress fails to act during the current session, the next major opportunity for similar legislation could be as far away as 2030.
For the crypto industry, September is therefore about more than a single Senate vote. The Clarity Act has become a test of whether the U.S. can translate its increasingly crypto-friendly policy direction into lasting legislation before the political window closes.
