A U.S. BITCOIN RESERVE COULD FORCE CHINA TO RETHINK ITS CRYPTO STRATEGY

A Bitcoin reserve race among the world’s biggest economies could reshape global financial power as nations compete for a scarce digital asset.

In brief:

₿- A larger U.S. Bitcoin reserve could pressure China to rethink its restrictive crypto policy and explore new ways to gain strategic exposure to BTC.

₿- China could potentially leverage regulated Bitcoin investment products and household savings to support long-term sovereign Bitcoin accumulation.

The United States has already established a Strategic Bitcoin Reserve, marking a significant shift in how governments view Bitcoin as a potential strategic asset. Under the 2025 executive order, the reserve was initially capitalised with Bitcoin obtained through federal forfeiture proceedings, while the administration also directed officials to explore budget-neutral ways to acquire additional BTC.

If Washington eventually pursued a much larger Bitcoin reserve, potentially approaching 1 million BTC, the move could create a new strategic challenge for other major economies, especially China, as the United States’ biggest geopolitical rival.

Bitcoin could become a U.S.-China strategic asset

China currently maintains a highly restrictive approach to cryptocurrency activity. A significant expansion of the U.S. Bitcoin reserve could therefore create an unusual policy dilemma for Beijing.

Rather than immediately attempting to match U.S. purchases, China could theoretically explore ways to gain greater exposure to Bitcoin through its existing financial infrastructure. Such an approach could involve tighter control over privately held crypto assets alongside new, regulated investment vehicles.

One possibility would be a government-approved Bitcoin investment product allowing Chinese investors to gain exposure to BTC through RMB without directly holding or transferring the cryptocurrency. Actual Bitcoin could remain with regulated custodians, while investors would receive financial returns based on its market performance.

China’s household savings could become a source of BTC demand

Such a framework could potentially connect China’s enormous domestic savings pool with the global Bitcoin market.

If regulatory policy changed, investment funds could purchase Bitcoin on behalf of domestic investors. Over time, a sovereign institution could theoretically acquire some of those holdings, transferring BTC onto a government balance sheet while returning RMB to investors.

The process would create a potential channel between Chinese household capital and sovereign Bitcoin accumulation without requiring Beijing to purchase its entire position directly from global markets at once.

A new Bitcoin reserve race

The broader significance would extend beyond China. A large-scale U.S. accumulation strategy could encourage other governments to reconsider Bitcoin’s role in national reserves.

The United States has already recognised Bitcoin’s scarcity as strategically relevant by creating its reserve. If other major economies responded with their own accumulation strategies, competition for a finite digital asset could intensify.

China would not necessarily need to copy Washington’s model. Its centralised financial system could theoretically allow it to pursue a different route, combining regulation, domestic capital and state-controlled investment channels.

For now, however, any Chinese Bitcoin reserve strategy remains hypothetical. There is no indication that Beijing is preparing such a programme. The scenario instead highlights a potentially important question for the future of cryptocurrency: could Bitcoin become an increasingly important component of geopolitical and sovereign financial competition?
